Keep in mind the 120-300 is substantially heavier and harder to handhold.

For those who own this, how is the af speed compared to a 300 f/4 prime or a 100-400L for those who own/have owned them? Its the only thing im really concerned about, everything else seems to be great, IQ, build quality etc.

I seem to be repeating myself a lot on this thread. The Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8EX is the fastest focusing and most accurate focusing zoom I own (list in signature) and yes... that list includes a 100-400L.

Like our esteemed Muderator (above) i also own a 100-400L (which i like) alongside a 120-300.

I just happen to like the 120-300 more :)

I owned a 100-400 but got fed up with it's poor low light performance so sold it to get the 120-300

Well i spent all day Saturday at the Silverstone Classic shooting with the 120-300 and 2x TC on the camera...which has only confirmed what an excellent lens this is :D

To be honest, web-sized shots don't do it justice so i'm working on a full gallery of hi-res shots taken only with the 120-300, with & without the TC. I'll post up a link when it's ready in a few days.

Looking forward to it GSH. That pic is as sharp as my prime is without any TC's.

I'm glad you did repeat yourself!. You have made me read more about this lens. It looks like an amazing lens.
I would mainly use it for youth baseball.
I already own it's "little brother" the 100-300mm f/4. Because of the weight of the 2.8, I could see owning both, at least for a while.

I might pick up the Canon 200mm 2.8L and then start saving for this one

Ok so I want to add a question to this mix.

I am in the process of picking up the non-DG version.

I have heard that the Sigma 1.4 extender doesn't affect focus speed like the Canon does on the Canon Lenses?

Is this true or not?

Ross

Not true. Focus speed is decreased with he Sigma 1.4x extender regardless of Sigma's claims to the contrary. However, the 120-300mm AF speed is still fast enough with the 1.4x TC to shoot everything up to and including Formula 1 race cars.
