Rumours that Eclipse fluid might damage EOS400D sensor?
Eclipse have just introduced a new cleaning solution E2 for "indium tin oxide" coated sensors, this includes sony and the EOS400D.
member Hurricane 777 brought my attention to the fact that the 5D and 400D do not have a normal glass window protecting the CCD, but a coated low pass IR filter. So this is what you clean with a swab!
A 5D owner has seemingly rubbed away the IR coating from his sensor.....
Needless to say, as a 400D owner with a similar sensor design I am now paranoid about continuing to swab my sensor using standard eclipse and swabs! Eclipse now specify the E2 solution is suitable for 400D, does that mean original solution is not?
As it is pointed out in the above threads, the full reason for why the coating may have been damaged isnt clear yet. It could be the constant rubbing action using a pec pad (not proper swab) that did the damage and not the Eclipse.. but time will tell!
Assuming the front of the filter on the 400D is coated with indium tin oxide (for antistatic repellant), this is safe to clean with methanol (Eclipse).....
