There are several reasons for 3 songs no flash rule.

1. they don't want the pit crowded with photographers so the punters in front row who have PAID for a ticket get a blocked view throughout.

2. the pit is NOT there for the photographers. It is there for the security people to monitor the crowd and pull out the ones being crushed. The pit is only "loaned" to the photographers for the first three songs then they/we have to get out so security can do their job.

3. No flash is because it will destroy lighting design. An LD spends time designing a light show. Punters pay to see this and the band and constant flashing will ruin the experience. Remember, the people behind us have PAID for their tickets. We have not - in most cases.

As for how you are being treated depends on who you deal with. If it's me running press and PR you get treated well.

On the flip side - if I'm at a gig and the LD knows me he will make sure I get great lighting.

On another flip side - if I do the lights (or rather when I did) I used less red during the first three songs as I knew how much we all hate it.

I'm a former roadie who have turned to "the other side" and now do marketing. Would love to get back on the road again.

Oh, oh, I almost forgot: She, WELCOME to POTN!

1a. The rules get set for the worst case and are then simply used everywhere.

Thank you! This is the kind of forum I've been looking for for ages. Being a Canon user back in the dark ages who went to the dark side and used nikon for a while, realizing I had to come back in to the light and returned to being a canon user. Two canon printers, canon DSLR but shamefully an HP P&S compact. I have to do something about that.

And more importantly, what's a "punter," apart from the little dude with one cross-bar that the coach hates.

Nice, although I'd have done the BW conversions in a significantly different manner.

What's interesting is that Slayer made photographers sign a contract prohibiting any sort of usage other than in an article about the gig, published within 60 days of the gig when they last toured here in Finland. I guess they'll invent different rules for different parts of the world, then.

These "agreements" seem to ebb and flow based on a wide variety of factors such as current tour manager, record label, management, talent buyer, talent agency, whims of band members, etc., etc. In about 100 world class performances I have only been asked to sign one agreement, with ZZ Top. I think this usually doesn't happen because I don't go through our PR people but rather work directly for the production department.

So, do you have a link for a B&W conversion procedure?

I mainly was thinking about how differently I'd probably have bent those curves and mixed the color channels

Here's the "basic" channel mixer bw conversion method: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tu...w_better.shtml

And here's a couple of my bw conversions that I personally like (I like havy contrast in BW pictures):
1, 2, 3, 4

Interesting. At the last Slayer show in Seattle they didn't have us (only two accredited shooters) sign anything and they let us stay in the pit for the entire show.

It will be interesting to see what the situation is when I shoot Slayer next month. I'm expecting the three song rule to be in effect and half expecting to be escorted out of the venue after the first three songs (I hope not). I'm hoping I will be able to shoot Mastodon before hand who are the support band. As for signing a release with publishing terms I expect I will have to but maybe I won't.

On the matter of releases there is usually a "without permission" clause that prevents publication etc "without permission". I have asked for permission several times to either publish or display or sell images somewhere else apart from the publication I was shooting for and every time permission has been granted.
