Default "snow flies" - winter stonefly and midge

I went back to the trout stream today to try and get better pics of the Stoneflies and midges I saw yesterday. These bugs actually emerge and mate in winter rather than in warmer weather.

Don't see a lot of snow-bugs! This is cool!

Thanks all. Had better luck today by stepping up the exposure bias a notch and getting more magnification with a borrowed 12 mm kenko tube and (I'm sorry!) a +10 filter.

I have a full set of Kenkos on order so in 2 weeks I'll be set to get serious!

Fantastic, I've never seen insects on ice before.

Thanks Nymph. I guess we actually have quite a few around here. I'm still looking though.

Had to call my field trip short today- took a dive in the creek! Yuck!!! (Saved my camera though).

Thanks Irwin. The tubes will definitely make my warm weather bug hunts a lot more satisfying!

They would probably give my Snow Fleas a run for their money. Its amazing what does live on ice and snow. First the Springtails I found that have Antifreeze in their Blood and now these. Very well done.

Thanks B.E.

Ironically I am still looking for my first snow fleas. I hear they are common but I just haven't run across them yet- at least not that I know of!
