Canon G1 vs Nikon 995

Hello,

My first post here. First let me congratulate Pekka for the AMAZING photos... Really AMAZING.

I plan to buy a digital camera (my first one) soon, in fact I'm delaying the act of buying it based on several reviews I read. Last month my choice was for sure the CANON G1. Then I visited a famous photographer that told me that the Nikon 990 was way better. His photos were really good.

I had a G1 for one week, and only felt less ergonomic than the Nikon model (handgrip)... Besides that, and the obvious microphone that Nikon didn't included on the 900 series, I can't made up my mind and decide which one to buy.

Now the Nikon 995 just came out with several addition to the 990 model.

My question is, wich is the best camera? Canon, Nikon or even Olympus? This is a CANON forum, so, tell me why should I buy the G1 instead of the 995?

I am also at this exact position. I have seen some beautiful pictures with the GI. I have also noticed and read of problems with focus and metering. I like the metering on the 995 better than the metering on the G1, but of course the over exposure on some shots can be compensated for. However, many of the shots I have seen with the 995 seem just a tad dark, but the detail is preserved very well. Just looked at the G1 at Circuit City. It looks and feels like a quality camera. The menu system was very well layed out and easy to navigate. I really liked the brightness of the LCD. Just not sure about the focus and metering. I done some photography in the past with a Canon EOS...nothing real serious though...I am more of a point and shoot person, but I am not adverse to making some manual adjustment. I am rambling, but I will be anxiously falling the responses to this question.

You have asked the question that everyone wants to know and no one can really answer for YOU!

It really must be a personal decision that should be made on the type of photography that you desire and your needs. The feel of the camera is as important as how well others take pictures with a certain camera. I think that things like battery life, add ons, lens quality, and mounting are things to consider.

My opinion is what ever you decide to buy, do it and then stop comparing to other cameras. All the cameras in this class take GREAT pictures, bad ones as well.

Ok, I got your point . Basically I came to realise that It's harder to choose a digital camera than a car... I also was stuck when I decided to buy a new car. I also had 2 choices, VW GOLF 1.9TDI or AUDI A3 1.9TDI SPORT. The two also had pros and cons, and in the end I decided to buy the one I "felt better driving", So I choosed the A3 that has a more sporty design and in my oppinion wins the GOLF by a small percentage of reasons.

Back to the camera, I always had my mind on G1, and after almost 2 months of intense reading of foruns and reviews (dpreview being the best site for reviews), the Canon G1 is my choice (being the worse cons on this camera the lack of the hand-grip)... I can't understand why the hell canon didn't worked harder on this matter.

As I suspected, I must buy this camera as soon as possible before I read anything else BUT is there a Canon G1.5 on the forge? If so I don't mind to wait more 2 or 3 months to get this new version. Any idea if this will happen in the near future?

i have been taking pictures for 1o years with film slr....

and let me tell u, i have never taken pictures EVER better than the G1 for all these years.

this may be the first G1 for many more to come...

it trains u to be a better photographer.

nikon has its good points,, especially metering...

but, i think G1 is overall a better learning camera.

I would not expect a successor to the G1 until late fall, perhaps later if they are going to come up with something other than a few refinements (ie 990 to 995).

The metering on the 995 certainly is more sophisticated, but this doesn't seem to be an area of complaint for G-1 owners.

As for help on getting a grip on the G1 I have used some clear, non-slip tape (nubbly in texture) on the large flat areas of the grip side of the camera. This helps eliminate that slippery feel.

My suggestion is to get as much memory as you can afford, a 1gb microdrive if you can. The added memory will encourage you to experiment more and become a better photographer faster.

I thank you all for the help, and yes I finallly decided I'll buy a G1 with a Microdive... The 1GB would be the best, but it depends on my next project budget...

I hope G1 is as good as I read on the reviews and comments!

I'm also in doubt of which camera I should buy… I tended to go for the Canon G1 over the Nikon 995 but seeing the Chromatic Aberrations performance on the Image Quality page http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong1/page14.asp of the G1 (www.dpreview.com) I started to doubt even more. It’s the only big difference between the camera’s I can found and it looks pretty troubling to me. What do you guys think about the bad performance of the G1 on this matter?

I think this has to be a personal decision. I waffled between the G1, 990/995 and the Oly 3040Z for weeks. I went and held all 3 (couldn't shoot with them) and actually the 3040 felt the best--because of the grip. However, it uses Smartmedia, so it got ruled out and I didn't consider it any more. I chose the G1 based on the LCD (a definite plus if you shoot outdoors--or anywhere for that matter), the ability to shoot in very low light situations and the quite good menu system--which I know off by heart--no looking now *S*. I shoot macro a lot so the 995 has a bit of plus there but I bought a macro set and the shots are good. I also liked the pics I've seen posted a lot of places. Personally, the CA has not been a problem in 95% of my pics (I've also read of problems in all the camera forums with CA)--nor has AF. The metering has reasonable solutions too--check out some of the threads at www.drpreview on exposure--there is one excellent one about a month ago that made me understand exactly how metering was happening and how to work 'with' the camera.

However, all that said--I doubt you would be unhappy with either. Too bad we can't all try out these cameras first, but that rarely happens. Someone above said make a decision and don't look back--just go and enjoy it.

I'm not sure who asked the original question of which camera was better but, as you are aware, you are asked a forum of canon users. Now you just got pointers to an avid Nikon user in a Nikon forum. You might as well be asking a Priest or Rabbi about the others religion and/or asking them which is better!

I'd advise you to look at the reviews, that try to be a little less biased, and make your own decision. In my humble opinion.... You can't go wrong with either of them. Just be happy with your decision. Once you make the decision and start using it... you won't care and I doubt you'll have any regrets.
