Ok so I have been asked to take some pics of family playing baseball & softball but some of the games are in the evening. Would I be ok to use this lens? not sure if I will be upset if I dont have enough lighting. This will be my first so please dont be to harsh on me.
Or should I just stick to offering my services to weekend games during the day?? |

The f/4 will never cut it. If by family you mean rec softball and baseball at the park, the lighting will be horrid. You might find that f/2.8 is not good enough. Stay with the day games unless you can get faster glass.

Maybe. It will depend upon how much available light you actually have.
Not knowing exactly what you're up against, here's a guess -- Go to Av, AWB, shoot RAW, f/4, partial metering, move ISO up to your max (1600 or 3200), and give it a ride. You will get a slow shutter speed; pan with action, keep your center-point AF on the player's face, and you just might surprise yourself. Even f/2.8 would struggle there, no doubt, so it is a long shot; if the game is important to you, you might consider renting a 135mm f/2 from www.lensrentals.com for an event or two. It isn't expensive. |
