I have read many threads on here about telecoverters and a few people have said not to get a 2X t-con but didn't explain why. I have the XTI and the 70-300mm is usm, I am wanting to get more reach and if I am going to buy a t-con I figured I might as well get more by getting the 2x (I was looking at the MC7 DG) instead of the 1.4X. What are the reasons to stick with a 1.4X instead of the 2X?

First, with your lens, you will loose auto focus with either Tcon. In good light, you might get some auto focus with a 1.4 and the tape trick, but it will be spotty. The reason that the 1.4 gets the nod over the 2x is that the 1.4 degrades picture quality to a much lesser degree.

That is not a lens that will take a 1.4 or 2.0 TC well. Just stick to the bare lens and move closer or be happy with what you got.

ON a zoom a 2xtc will degrade the image even on a L zoom ,the 1.4 is the best way to go but even this will not please everyone on a zoom lens - Reason A zoom is a comprmise in it's self - Prime,s work better with a tc as they are not haveing to cover diffrent focal lenths so give a sharper image in the first place there are a couple of top end zooms that take a tc well from what iv read like the sigma 300/800 .

I bought the same one you are considering. It will work, but not great. However,( there is always an however), I have done really well with that TC on my 100-400L using manual focus. It needs to be pretty bright light but you can get some excellent shots. I am glad I have it and have even gotten some good shots using it coupled with the Canon 1.4TC.

I have both the 1.4 and 2x Canon TC's and found them to be a waste of money. And I'm convinced the tape trick will ruin your USM over time. It just can't be good for it to give it St. Vitus dance. Something is going to come loose.

i agree about the tape trick i would not want to try that on a nice lens just to risky forcing it to jump about. Rob. |

i have found that on the 70-200L f4 IS and non IS a 1.4 TC is essential kit. i would and never have considered a 2x TC tho. ed rader |

Well the 2X TC is primarily for the 4 super-teles from Canon and best af with a 1 series body (especially the 500/600). I wouldn't use it on anything else.

Well, to be fair to the 1.4 and 2x TC's, they work fine on my 600mm digiscope when laid across a pillow on the hood of my truck. On the tripod it is too wiggley even with MLU and a remote cord.

I recenlty got my Canon 2x TC and I'm pretty happy that this little thing bring me to 400mm with my 70-200 f2.8 IS.
Took a few shots of the snow in my backyard. I am pretty happy with the IQ.
