For optimnal performance; is it essential that the card speed in the two slots be the same? In other words, have them both be ultra II? If one is a "normal" speed card and the other an ultra II, will that slow down the write speed?
I don't yet have this body, but I'm learing all I can in advance of purchase! Thanks, Tom

For example if you have the camera set to write RAW files to the CF and back up with jpeg to the sd slot, should both cards be the same? With the high frame per second this camera is capable of, will a slow(normal) card in one of the slots effect the shooting speed?

it would but I think you would struggle to put it in a real life situation where it get to the point of causing a problem. how ever if you chimp and shoot big bursts your going to be weighting for a while no matter what card youve got in

In the Raw on one card and jpeg on another.. just make sure the jpegs are going to the slower card to prevent the bottleneck. (jpegs so much smaller that the slower card most likely won't be so slow that the jpeg can;t make the transfer before the RAW file. ) In any case, anytime your writing to both, the bottleneck will be created on the card where the data is not getting written slowest. As mentioned, the buffer on the MkII is pretty huge and fast, but I have run into it under normal use. The faster the card the better. An interesting question. Testing might be helpful, but make sure to check Rob Galbraith's card performance database rather than matching up, for example, an Extreme III SD card with an Extreme III CF card. The SD cards perform much better in the 1D MKII N than CF cards. You can get the details here:

I did that once and really it was so slow to write to SD but it was fast enough to write RAW to CF, i will buy more CF and SD cards so i can use both formats mostly for sports because one of my friends asking me to have jpeg shots instead of RAW so that i have to use both formats shooting.
I will get all Extreme or faster for now. |
