Default Web Hosting?

I'm getting ready to launch a personal photograpgy website.

I need recommendations on where to host my site. I know how to write html and have designed websites in the past. I don't need one of those template builders or whatever. Just a site that I can register a domain name and upload my pages to make a website.

Thanks.

www.hostgator.com - i've been through a half dozen hosts in a few years and these guys are great. Uptime and support are excellent. Godaddy is the biggest host worldwide, but i'm not overly impressed.

I use http://www.siteflip.com/low-cost-web-hosting/ for hosting, and you can get a domain from lots of places for less than $15 a year

We've used IXWebhosting for years. They've got some nice hosting plans, very affordable and pretty comprehensive. I know quite a few other photographers that are happy with them as well...

I just started using dreamhost.com. I'm using their 2nd to best hosting option (level 3). It's $15.95 a month for 2 years, but you get a ton of hosting space...

- 300+ gb of storage
- 3.2tb of bandwidth
- a bunch of one-click installs (gallery2, blog software, joomla, etc)

For the sheer size of storage (which goes up every month) it's a pretty good deal. Also, their control panel is way nicer compared to godaddy, which I really hated when I was using them a few years back.

if you decide to go with them use me as you're referral "oliversmith@gmail.com"

What you should really do is find a script (search for 'php gallery') or use a java app like Jalbum to process everything for you so that you don't waste time actually "publishing" the photo to your site. There are also ways to turn blogs (like Wordpress) into photoblogs.

I have a few servers strewn across the US that I use for development and hosting people's sites (and my sites as well). Hit me up, depending upon what you need, I may just be able to host your site for free.

I use www.hostdog.net as it's great service, never any down time (6+ years not one minute of down time with them), has above and beyond features others dont offer built in (email, spamassassin, tracking, control panel, and about 30 other buttons I never use but are there in the panel). What I don't like with godaddy or other companies is they make your info public (name, address, phone numbers, email, etc), unless you pay to make it private. When the math comes down to it, along with service I have yet to see anyone better than hostdog (but then again been so satisfied never even looked past a few here and there to compare).

Mike, you live on Bunnell Street. Your domain information isn't private. And the numbers 0546 come up too. I'm not sure what hostdog told you but domain info is easy to find.

An easy one to find out about domain information is a quick look up at http://whois.net. It costs extra for making a domain private. It does help, mainly in the reduction of SPAM and phone calls.

I have used many sites for hosting (mainly since some clients where already using them) A simple one I have used is OLM.net. Other then that, any ones I create I work with a friend who owns a hosting company.

Jason already mentioned it, but its required that your information be made public.

What should I look for as for as packages go? How much transfer, how much space?
