Nice! I never get tired of smoke shots. Did you rotate it upside down? Or is it cigarette smoke blown downwards?

P.S. My initials are JDubya too

It is smoke indeed - againste a black BG, inverted and flipped 180 To get the angle i just tilted the camera.

I can't STAND cigarettes so I used some nice indian incense.

I also tried doing the smoke shots a week or so ago.

I found it pretty easy, except the focusing part. You really need plent of light, and need to shot a very narrow DOF.

Here are mine.

What did you use for flash? Did you manual ofcus or try auto? I used a Alien Bee 800 and Manual Focus.

haha, my lighting is super ghetto. I did this in my "bedroom studio" (I'm away at school). I used one of those 300w halogen floor lamps with a DIY snoot to keep the light off the BG. Then I angled the lamp low pointing up into the smoke. No flash was used.

For focusing I used auto focus once on a big puff of smoke but i have custom function 04 set to 1:AE lock/AF so that I can focus with the * button. With this setting, pushing the shutter button doesn't refocus.
