This poll is designed to update/supplement the current Top Ten Starter Lenses Poll. There have been many new lenses added since this poll that should be included as they have become more and more prominent over the past few years. I realize that some would like separate polls for 1.6 crop cameras and FF cameras but for now we will keep it as one poll. It would be very easy for someone to accidentally vote in the wrong poll for the wrong lens so this seems to make sense for now.

So let's get voting. Remember that you can vote for multiple lenses, however, try to only vote for lenses in which you are familiar. Feel free to share your reasons for your votes here as well.

I like the canon 10-500mm f/1.0 but since I'm not familiar with it I'll have to vote for the Tamron 17-50.

Well, imho if making lists is the thing to do, the top ten starter lenses and the top ten walk around lenses would be two different lists...

For example I'd pick some pretty high end glass for my top ten walk arounds, but I probably wouldn't recommend $1000+ glass for a starter lens.

Then vote that way. The Top Ten Starter Lenses Poll isn't going to be removed. This is just an addition to the polls.

I voted for the 17-40 f/4L for use in a crop camera. Because it will give nice wide shots and also good for normal shots. No IS means to learn proper holding technique.

For full frame I voted for 24-105 f/4L IS.

I think I confused the issue by thinking the two were related in the previous thread, when this really is a separate poll.. My fault for that. Mike was correct to see a use not only for a poll that includes a whole lot of new lenses that did not exist 3 years ago, but also to for the favorite walk around, as opposed to "starter" where budget is such a concern.

I misunderstood this the first time we spoke and I think that's when the two ideas got mushed together.. Mike's just too kind to point out my meddling confusion. ;)

Added to the FAQ sticky :)

Oh, okay it seemed like the two were being combined from the original wording.

I voted 17-55IS, 24-70L, and 35L. The first two depending on if it's a crop cam or not. I imagine the 24-105L would be a better choice than the 24-70L for many, but I'm pretty smitten with large apertures, so I could live with the size/weight.

Wow, looks like we have a clear strong starter..
I only voted for 4, even though there were others that seem natural choices, I've not used them so couldn't actually pick them in good faith.

Yeah, after you mentioned that I decided to reword the first post. Sorry for the confusion.

Don't be so hard on yourself Jake. I think my wording was confusing which is why I edited my first post to reflect bacchanal's thoughts. He was right. But true, I am too kind.:p

Now I see why we have so many 24-70 vs 24-105 threads.:D

Where is the Sigmonster or the 400 f/2.8 IS?? Now those are lenses you can walk around!

It all started as a hobby with a Rebel XT & KIT lens. $5K worth of equipment & $0 of income later, all I have to show for it is a harddrive full of pictures and priceless memories!! Yeah it's still worth it :)

I would put the 24-105 at the top for full frame but probably the Sigma 17-70 for crop. However, I don't think the poll is going to be very useful until it is split by camera type.
