Just a few ships from approximately 70 that are anchored off the Newcastle Coastline at the moment.

Wow that's a great capture! Is that normal to be anchored off the coastline or is something up?

Reminds me of being off Fujairah, close to the Persian Gulf, in the late 80s when our 'friend' Saddam had let loose lots of mines in the Gulf. The tankers awaiting orders all anchored off Fujairah so as to avoid the mines and then proceeded into the Gulf when ordered by their owners.
Unfortunately it didn't work as one of the local supply boats hit a mine on one of their supply trips and (I think) all on board were killed. No one expected the mines to get that far down. At night, from the shore, the lights of the ships looked like the lights of a city out at sea. Is this happening in your location? Why are they all anchored there? These look like bulk carriers as opposed to tankers. |

There is usually always ships anchored out there, just waiting their turn to enter the port. Recently however the demand at the port has increased significantly while the port infrastructure isn't capable of handling the increased demand, hence the much larger than usual line-up.

Great shot! I was in Newcastle late last year and saw this same view and didn't have my camera. What a crazy site. It was dark and stormy that day, and totally reminded me of the Goonies.
