Seems like theres bit a lot of fuss about the joyousness of the 5d lately.
What proportion of you actually have it? Do the majority still have crop cameras? Of those of you with a crop camera, would you consider upgrading? My perspective is: I can't afford it and the more expensive lenses that come with it and don't think it will stop me from taking good photographs! |

if i had $3k to blow on a body, there woudl be NO DOUBT in my mind that i would upgrade. as it stands now though, im happy with my XTi. when i get my tax check the 24-70 and the 70-200 f/4 IS are mine. then i will start saving for the 5D replacement body. that way i have great lenses for now and they will be great lenses when i get the next body

i love it. i had one, then thought it was too much camera/money for me, so i sold it, bought a 30D/grip and a 17-552.8IS, but after a week, i missed the 5D so much, i traded the 30D package for another 5D body. it's an amazing little machine.

i think most people who are looking at it have the same concern. if i can afford it i will go for it. as it is, im looking to 'upgrade' in the next 12 months as i get more photo work, 30D is the default upgrade, but would sure love to stretch for a 5D if finances permits.

Have taken a few trips over to naturescape, and was a bit surprised by the number of non-1D and 5D users doing landscapes (a lot of 10/20/30D's and xxxD's). There are 1D's and 5D's too, but after hanging around here for a while, I was getting the impression that Canonites were rapidly converting to the 1D's and 5D's.

I own the 5D and the 30D. I love my 5D for the reason its FF. The downside is the speed on the 5D(3ps). The pictures are crisp on the 5D. I still have the 30D for reason of speed (5fps) I use my 70-200 2.8 on the 30D mostly to catch my son running on the soccer field. The 5D is a joy and if you have the cash, go for it. =)

New owner of a Rebel Xti here. I'm probably going to be picking up an Elan 7NE as a full-frame film camera in a couple of months. I don't foresee an upgrade to a 5D (or its successors) within the next three years. Hopefully by that time the price will have come down even more for full-frame digital.

For what I do Im happy with 1.6. Not that the 5d isnt a great camera, it is, and maybe my opinion will change in the future, but Im happy with 1.6, I just think its time to upgrade bodies.

(1) 14.75% of us have the 5D
(2) of those, 88.7% have retained their crop bodies for the subjects they handle better; sports, birdwatching, etc. (3) Since it's not an 'upgrade' (each has differing strengths) your third question is unanswerable. Not having a camera will stop you from taking good photographs. Not having a 5D will stop you appearing in bankruptcy court. |

Sorry, but that's just plain silly. It is indeed an upgrade and having it hasn't put me in "bankruptcy court."

Yes, it is an upgrade. I think I detect a hint of sarcasm.

Don't be sorry: of course my response was silly. In the way it was worded, so was the question. How as individuals are we to come up with a proportion? Personally, I used chicken bones and sheeps' entrails, then took an average reading.
But I was serious about the 5D not necessarily being a 'upgrade'. It is certainly NOT a step forward for 20D/30D owners who specialise in subjects that require 'reach' and/or rapid-fire shooting. My 5D is a constant companion for portraiture, scenery and most general photography. But the 20D still gets dusted down if I'm stalking great auks or Catherine Zeta-Jones from a distance. |

Upgrading to a 5D isn't necessary and your basically paying for the FF and higher megapixel count. Just make due with what you have and not having the latest and greatest isn't where it's all about. It's the passion for photography. Don't forget that folks
