Default problem focusing with 1D Mark IIN

I have a problem getting the face sharp with my 1D Mark IIn. I read a previous post that addressed moving the AF point up and shooting in El Servo. I did that. I am trying to focus in on my son who is on the right. But it ends up soft in the face. I have had many photos end up just like this. Could someone give me some tips?

500 shutter (There just happened to be a break in the action). 2.8 Shutter. and 1600 ISO due to getting dark and no lights on yet.

In the photo posted, in CS2 here, I can't tell where the focus is sharp; I'm wondering where/what the AF did lock on to.

Me too. The best I can tell is maybe the shorts. Hard to tell because they are black. But the AF point is higher.

I don't know; I'll be interested in the expert's take and learn from it.

As slowly as your subjects appear to be moving, they might not make a difference but I'd suggest you use custom functions C.Fn 17-1 and C.Fn 20-1. C.Fn 17-1 expands the focus one pont in all directions and C.Fn 20-1 slows AI Servo tracking sensitivity so that other moving subjects won't throw it off. Then use single point focus and hold the focus point on your subject's face.

It could but low light conditions that usually accompany light rain probably cause more problems for AF sensors.
