Default Sparred Owl, Male Kestral and Barn Owl

We went to a fund raiser for our local audubon chapter today and they had some local wildlife rehab group there with a few rehabbed birds in it...
everything taken with the 5D and the 70-200 F4IS

Their talk definitely spurred me to get more involved in the wildlife rehab program, it's a very worthy cause...I think I'll volunteer.

Nice.

Why is the first one a "sparred" owl rather than a barred owl like http://50birds.com/uploads/Byuboy54/...wl-contest.jpg ?

Because it's a hybrid owl cross btw. the barred owl and the spotted owl. We learned today during their talk that not only are the two groups breeding but the young are fertile and breeding as well...which could lead to a new species label all together.
