And when did Canon say that? In Canon's comments about sensor cleaning when the XTi came out, they said they had been doing R&D on it since 1998 and that it was in no way quickly implemented after other brands added it.

IF (and I mean if, because I don't think they will) they do, it would probably be in the consumer level bodies to compete with the Sony's of this world. It would not be the first time a feature was in lower cameras that was not available higher up the range (e.g. Eye Control in the days of film) actually the pop up flash is possibly a good parallel here, it is not available in pro bodies as it is assumed they already have a better flash, perhaps the same could be said for IS?

Canon is standing behind Lens based IS because its more profitable and they have all the R&D paid for. When they "Invented" IS we all used film and moving it around wasnt an option. I would love in body IS, you would always have the option to turn it off. The competition is getting steep and olympus just announced it first in body IS camera, pretty soon canon and nikon will be the only ones with out this feature and no matter what you purests think, it will hurt their market share.

In body IS reduces resolution. It makes far better sense to have the lens IS from a quality point of view.

Canon goes their own way to make consumers see the light. I've alwys liked that.

IS in the lens is also better because it stabilizes what you see in the viewfinder as well as the view that's projected onto the focusing sensors... but does the general camera-buying public really understand or care, or would they rather have IS with all their lenses?

No. The can make more money by charging you for IS on every lens instead of just on one body.

For the same reason Canon opts to place the autofocus motor in each lens, my guess is that they will continue to use lens-based IS: They can better optimize the IS for the particular lens. One reason competitors have resorted to a body-based image stabilization system is due to the fact that Canon had a patent on the lens-based IS technology.

Canon's patent has not stopped Sigma or Nikon developing in lens stabilisation, so why would the patent only affect other manufactirers?

It's my understanding that Canon's original IS patent has now lapsed, which is why the competition have adopted it. I can't say for sure without actually searching and reviewing Canon's existing patents at the Patent Office, but I'm guessing that Canon still has patents on their later generations of IS technology; e.g., mode 1 and 2, 3 stop IS capability, etc.

By going the body IS route, they are less likely to be impeded by Canon's numerous patents on the lens IS technology.
