What do you folks do to protect your camera from the elements? (well those of you who do not have a weather sealed 1-series that is!) How have you been the most creative?

I put everything in ziplock bags if I know I'm going out, but usually, if it's really heavy rain, I have my sons hold an umbrella over me and I keep a clear plastic over my lens and camera on a tripod. I do have raingear, but it's not as useful as the umbrella. In driving rain, I just won't shoot. I had to shoot a whole wedding in the rain once and had 2 people holding umbrellas and I had tarps under and I've even used white plastic grocery bags to cover the gear.

AquaTechs expensive, but beats having to replace or repair lens/camera

Another option is if you have an old waterproof jacket, you can cut up the sleeves and body of that and put it back together again with some duct tape to make some pretty effective rain covers.
Those were the first ones that I had and they worked brilliantly! Currently have a set of Canon rain covers - rather nifty things, although much like hens teeth! |

Where on earth did you find those Paul
I've bought a pair of waterproofs and sat down with some sissors. It's not great but it works. I've only used it 3 times. If I had to shoot in rain regually, I'd buy a storm jacket of something better. Darren Last edited by DarrenL : 28th of April 2007 (Sat) at 14:42. |

I use the Kata 702 is it's great for the camera, but no good if you want flash also.
My events boss invented a gizmo that goes in between the camera mount and the mono pod than can hold an umbrella. It's not too bad either. Just make sure you clean and dry everything afterwards. It will be "damp" in some shape or another. |

I have just got a pack of these from ebay
http://www.optechusa.com/product/detail/?PRODUCT_ID=73 If you search for optech, it should pop up a few results... Figured they will look a little better than the tesco bag I currently use <tuffty/> |

I shoot white water rafting a lot, I have an ewa-marine housing for my camera and a pelican case for my extra gear (which I'm thinking of leaving behind because I rarely use the stuff). I also keep extra cards and batteries in a small pelican in a waist pack, so that I can change those relativly quickly when we're on a not so splashy section of the river. In normal rain, even my 20D does fine, even in the horrendous stuff that the west coast can throw at us. I do sometimes use a fun self-invented system of plastic shopping bags and hair elastics if I'm anticipating bad weather.
