If you are looking to just share photos have you considered an image sharing site like pbase, smugmug, etc.

If you are looking to write your own there are many templates out there that one can buy. If you are half way decent with photoshop have a look at a program called Site Grinder. You build all your pages in one photoshop document and then it will build the corresponding code for you. I have it but haven't finished one yet. It looks pretty cool.

I currently have a Smugmug site and can recommend them highly as a hosting service. Their customer service and features are fantastic! If you want a pro site, you might consider using Bluehost and purchasing a mini site from www.allwebco-templates.com/. They make it very easy to put together a nice site for a low price.

I have a hosting site, and as I will be uploading large volumes, better to host my own site.

It is mostly for viewing to start off with.
Dont mind writing something. will look at the photoshop thing

If you are looking for gallery software in particular, try www.airtightinteractive.com - they have some IMO excellent flash viewers available freeware.
I use simpleviewer on my site & I know a lot of other people use this also...
