While in Italy last month (04/2007) I had a small accident with my 70-200 f2.8 L lens and ended up with two decent sized gouges in the front element.
When I came home I priced out the repair with local camera repair shops and all were quoting in excess of $400.00 Sent the lens to the Canon Factory Service center in Jamesburg, NJ and they tore down the lens to check for alignment and replaced the front lens element. Total cost (including shipping) $115.00. The turn around time was 7 days. No hastles, good customer service, excelent price for the repair. Just wanted to share a positive experience. |

Great to hear. A lot cheaper than I would have expected.

Wow, thats great! I've had good luck with Canon service myself, although I've only dealt with them for warranty work. I have to agree with JC4, thats cheaper than I would have expected.

The cost was much lower than I expected as well. When I gouged the front element, the first thing that went through my mind was "there goes about $500".

And here I was all paranoid about keeping a UV filter on the front, and scared to take it off :P I'm really surprised about that low cost of repair as well. I remember when my rubber blower spat it's guts all over my sensor (and behind the lowpass filter) they fixed it for free.
Great service. Keeps customers happy. Happy customers stay and go to POTN. Then customers spend more money. And the cycle continues

I had a UV filter on the front... The UV Filter shattered and the shards from the filter are what gouged the front element.

Oh, maybe it was good then. Otherwise it could have been your front element shattering and gouging the second element, which may not be in as strong which would hit the third and you'd be buying a new lens
Either way, glad everything worked ok.

Man, that price is cheaper than some B&W filter and you get a fresh tuneup, alignment, focus adjustment too

That’s great news. I won’t worry as much about not having a filter on the lens.
