Well, a nice big white lens could pack quite a wallop.

I think if it really was a Canon, this is an invaluable Marketing opportunity.
(I am relieved that nobody got seriously hurt, though). Aussies out there, where is this place, can people just walk in those areas without problems, with their kids in arms and such?...

I spent a bit of time around Coral Bay a few years ago, really great SCUBA diving around there! There was one beach near there that was a sort of nursing area for juvenile sharks, dozens of little reef sharks, majority less than a metre long, in calf deep water, was great fun walking amongst them and they just seemed to ignore you, however a couple of times my legs were "bumped" by an inquisitive shark and I admit it made me jump!
The reason I was in this area was to film Whale Sharks for a Japanese documentary company, and we also managed to get great footage of a rather large Tiger Shark! Good Times! As far as I am aware there are no restrictions on entering the water around the area, indeed it is worth pointing out that there are an awful lot of people in the water at all times all around Australia and these attacks are thankfully extremely rare. I also felt much safer in the water around Oz, but that is because I know a bit about and understand marine creatures, however some of the insects and snakes you encounter on land terrified me! mjgravina - Location is sort of top left of Australia as you look at the map, around the 23rd parallel if I remember right! It is on the Ningaloo reef, which is a lot less famous or dived than the Great barrier and much more accessible from shore, and IMHO in many ways better diving than the GBR! And Western Australia itself is often overlooked by Tourists but is a fantastic place! Well worth a trip! Just take a sacrificial Nikon with you to defend yourself against attacks like this! Alex |

Thanks for the info, Alex. I have Nikonos in hand, all I need now is some vacation time and ship with the family down under to see this big Island the Australians boast so much about

For that I hope the shark got beaten with a big Canon tele! Or even a Nikon.. a 200-400 VR would pack quite a big smack too. |
