Please forgive the elementary nature of this question: what thread size should I be looking for that will allow me to mount my EOS 30D on a tripod? 1/4" or 3/8"? If it makes any difference, I am looking at a Manfrotto tripod and head (probably the 055 ProB + 486RC2).
I've done a search for an answer to this, but there doesn't seem to be anything on this forum. I have also searched Canon's web site, to no avail. The manual for the camera just tells me there's a hole on the bottom of the camera for a tripod, which isn't much use! |

The camera has the 1/4" thread. The larger 3/8" is most often used to mount the tripod heads to the tripod legs.
BTW, welcome to the forum.

To take Leo's reply a little further since you are in the UK - the thread sizes are U.S. (SAE) 1/4-20 and 3/8-16.
Note that these threads are NOT Whitworth threads, though there are very similar Whitworth sizes. The two thread profiles (SAE and Whitworth) are different enough to be potentially problematic under load.

Then again, when getting a 486RC2, you'ld be using the RC2 plate to connect camera to ballhead, and AFAIK, they only come in the correct 1/4" size...

There are RC2 plates (both standard and the 'architectural' anti-twist versions that I prefer) with 3/8" screws - though they're not common. The plates included with heads and the like have 1/4" screws.
