Today was the first time using the extender 1.4 with the 70-200 f/2.8. I used 500 ISO - game was 9 am - even at 9 am - the extender does cut some of the light down and autofocus was a bit slower - and some of the shots did come out a bit darker (not these posted below).
Now do you see any softness of any of these (degradation of image quality due to extender?) Re: underexposure - what's the remedy - higher ISO? (I can post the darker shots separately if necessary). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

They look very good to me and for 500iso i dont thik you could get better.
Remedy for under exsposuer is slower shutter speed or wider apeture or higher iso or a bit of all of them. Rob. |

They were shot at f9 and f10, open that lens up. That will let more light in and help with the bg blur. I usually overexpose a little to help with the cap bill shadows. There's no problem with the 1.4 on a 70-200, in my experience it doesn't affect IQ at all.

most of these were shot at shutter priority (I think maybe 1 was shot at aperture priority). In the earlier portions of the game, I did shoot at a slower shutter (I think it was 1250) then moved that up - and it was my memory that most, if not all, of the darker shots were at higher (faster) shutter priority, but at 500 iso. Would moving up the ISO in shutter priority give me a wider aperture for less underexposed shots? I realize that composition of the shots posted were off because of feet being cut off etc. I'm still getting used to the 70-200 on a monopod, and now adding the extender. I'm starting to get a bit of the feel of the thing. I'm still not totally concentrating on composition, I feel lucky if I got sharp shots and the camera/monopod hasn't fallen out of my hands )))):: Thanks.

Use aperture priority and it set to f4 (with your TC, 2.8 without) and adjust your ISO to get the shutter speed you want. Try shooting in portrait orientation some too.

If it's underexposing in an auto exposure mode, then you need to turn the exposure comp up. Those white uniforms are probably throwing the meter off a little. When doing sports, I tend to put it in manual, find an exposure that works for me, and then leave it there, assuming nothing major changes. That way you don't have to worry about a metering foul-up ruining that one great shot (nothing's more sickening than squeezing the button, expecting a great shot, and then hearing two very distinct, separate clicks from the shutter curtains dropping too far apart).

I plan to eventually show RAW ( so thatexposure can be adjusted from RAW). Right now, I have SO MUCH new stuff to deal with, that I just cannot handle another new thing for a while. I realize I have to shoot RAW eventually.

no time like the present! It's not any harder, and Canon's DPP that came with your camera is fairly simple to learn. Especially when you can always revert back to the original shot settings and start over.

I don't know how much faster the 30D buffers than the 20D, but I always shoot sports in JPEG, and everything else in RAW. I just can't stand being limited to bursts of six frames or less...

Don't worry about the bursts. I think you'll find most shooters rarely use it, except maybe for a fast, bang, bang play, perhaps a steal at second, etc. The shots you're showing of batters requires timing more than burst speed.
Shooting RAW gives you much more latitude to fix exposure and is no more difficult or time consuming to work in once you learn it. Good work. mark |
