Hello. I decided to finally switch over to a Macobook Pro. I have not owned a laptop for some time now. My last one was one of the Vaio series. Dont remember which one. The question is...for photoshop and general image related/creativity stuff, is it better to get a glossy screen or is this a prefrence thing? Im guessing glare would be more visible on a glossy screen? Thanks for reading.

Thanks Jack. I was thinking it may be harder to keep clean. How about when you look at pictures, or edit them. Are they difficult to see in well lit areas?

personally, i prefer working on a matte screen.
my macbook has a glossy screen and i never edit straight on the laptop. whenever i need to process photos, i always need to hook it up to my monitor. as far as the macbook pro goes, i'm pretty certain that it comes with a matte screen. however, i'm not sure if its the same matte screen found on other laptops where its not viewable from all angles.

I have a Sony Vaio with the glossy screen.
Although on first impression it looks nice, but after using it for a while I prefer the matte screen on my LCD. I'm not too crazy about the reflections off of the glossy screen, not to mention to endless fingerprint cleaning! Certainly has the "eye candy" effect though...

I own the 17" mbp matte screen. I prefer this because I am outside a lot with it as well as in cafe's where the light comes beaming in quite a bit. I do not have glare to deal with. I also like the fact that when I edit a photo and print it, I get what I see on the monitor, but I have not profiled it. But I am not saying that will always happen. Profiling is definitely the way to go to ensure you get what you see on the screen. It truly is a personal preference to which screen you get. I have owned a glossy screen before, and I just didnt care for it as much.
With the macs, I do not notice THAT big of a difference in the brightness either. And apple just updated their mbp's two weeks ago. Faster and the 17" has an hd display, a bit brighter with lcd backlights for better battery life. I hope this helps you. As for cleaning the screen, spend the $20 and get the iKlear... Can you say, AMAZING... Very nice cleaning solution and it will last a lifetime.

For editing photos, and also for normal use, I prefer NO glossy screen. The glossy one reflects to much. And I hope, like I did, you enjoy your switch to the MAC. Enjoy it...

For editing images (or any color critical work), I'd prefer an external monitor

IF you can deal with distracting off screen glare and IF you can keep it clean, then a glossy screen is fine.
If you have any lights that reflect in the screen it can drive you nuts. Personally, I'd prefer a glossy screen on a monitor on an editing desktop station where you can control the room lighting, cross lighting etc... J

Because Apple started doing it with glossy screens for the 10% who claim they 'need' it for editing photos and images. It is better if you can keep it clean and never have any lights or point sources behind you. The problem is keeping a laptop screen clean and having no lights behind you is next to impossible.
Apple is sort of the feature leader/innovator now and they are all think they have to keep up. So if Apple does it, then herd mentality rules.

I have two 17 inch MacBook Pros, both matte screens. I've used laptops since toshiba invented them, have owned at least 20 different ones, from Toshiba to Dell to Gateway to Sony to Stinkpads to MacBooks. Take my word for it, unless you will be working in a dark room, gloss screens stink. If you wear a light coloried shirt, you'll be seeing the reflection of your shirt in the screen. Apple matte screens rule. mark |

Thanks everyone. I bought the laptop today. WOW! This thing rocks! I went with the matte. I very happy with this thing. It seems easy so far. This is my first Mac. So far so good. Its taking me a little bit to get used to the way its setup. The machine has a very nice feel to it. Im loving it.

Good choice on the matte screen. I went that route on my MacBook Pro after having had glossy screen on an HP. Mark was right on about the direct reflections.
