Default Barn Swallow on Nest (REVISED AND HOPEFULLY IMPROVED)

OK I went back today with the 400 5.6 and the tripod and the Beamer and recharged batteries. It was still a tough position tucked up in that shaded corner but I did the best I could.

What do you think of these? C&C please.

Looks like you needed some light in there.

Yes Gary, more light would have helped.

Here goes a double dose of lame butt excuses. First off, all I took with me was the camera, lens and flash. I think the Beamer would have helped a lot. But, I also realized too late that the flash wasn't working properly. I quickly realized that the batteries needed recharging and I didn't have spares with me. I know I should be shot.

And then if that wasn't enough, I didn't have the EC set to where I wanted it because, with my stupid photo-gray lenses, I couldn't see squat in the darkened area. (I normally replace the photo-grays with another pair of regular glasses when I go out because this has happened before.)

Thanks Mitch. They have their nest over a barn/garage door where the city keeps all their park maintenance equipment in a "greenway" park near where I work. I walk through this park almost every day on my lunch break. I've been watching this nest for quite a while now.

Thanks Joayne. The tough day was yesterday. I took my camera with me at lunch and was using my 70-300 IS handheld and the flash wasn't working so it didn't matter that I didn't have the Better Beamer. I tried to do better today. At least I got the gear right.

Thanks Gary. Sometimes it takes a kick in the pants to go back out and try again.

When we left this morning for the state park where I made the Warbler images and some others I will post over the next day or two, I told my wife that we had to end up back at the Parkway (in the opposite direction) so I could have another chance at the Barn Swallow on the nest.

And I got a surprise. I did not know yesterday that the babies had hatched.

Now that's a nest! Leave it up to these expert builders! Nice shots!

Thanks. Appreciate the comment. Yes, I marveled at the nest and build up so close to the overhang... very well protected to be sure.

It's interesting where they choose to build their nest. I guess that's why they call them barn swallows.
