Just for grins I did a direct connect to the camera and Zoombrowser EX 5.7 pops up a box that says Camerawindow not compatible with detected camera. Needless to say I am baffled at this. Since when wont canon software work with a canon camera and yes it was set to computer connection in the menu. I dont know what to try now. Just use the card reader like always I guess.

Don’t use ZoomBrowser to connect your camera, use EOS Utilities instead..

But Zoombrowser is part of Canon Utilities. There is nothing called EOS Utilities here and Zoombrowser used to connect just fine. Its how you put your name into the cameras exif data bank.

I do not own XTi, I’m not 100% positive, but I’m pretty sure that EOS Utility is the way to go.
It must be somewhere on your installation CD anyway, try it.

CameraWindow has been replaced by EOS Utility. Install EOS Utility as Hermeto said and you'll be fine.

Ok went and got the EOS utility program and tried using it to open Zoombrowser. Same thing. Camerawindow is not compatible with detected camera. That was not the cure.

Did you actually get the EOS Utility window to pop up and download the images? The Zoombrowser part would come in after the download is complete. Also, when you plug in the camera, does any program start up by itself?

I hate to say it, but honestly, this is one of the reasons many of us never connect our cameras directly unless doing tethered shooting...

So you haven't changed the owner name in the camera so that it'll be included in the Exif info?

Did you connect the camera before installing the software? This can often be a "no-no" and can lead to incorrect driver installation for the camera. If you look in the device manager, with the camera connected and turned on, you may find an entry that is either for an unknown device or indeed for the camera itself. Try de-installing the device, disconnect the camera and then reboot. While you're at this point you may as well download the latest versions of the software from Canon's website and install that. (Zoombrowser is up to release 5.8a the last time I looked, so 5.7 is definitely not current.) Make sure you grab the latest copy of EOS Utility as well and install that. Reboot for safety's sake and then try connecting the camera again. With luck it should all start working fine.
I always connect my cameras straight to my computer and almost never use a card reader. I've never had a problem that couldn't be fixed with a procedure like that above. If following the manufacturer instructions properly and installing the software before the camera then I never have this problem at all. |

well I uninstalled and reinstalled the camera. it shows up just fine to the computer. the latest zoombrowser and eos utility are installed and then restarted the computer. turned on the camera and then eos utility. CAMERA NOT RECOGNIZED says eos utility. so much for that idea. device manager says EOS Kissnrebel xt 350d or some such thing; I did get it connect to the camera and snow t he 2 pics I had in there but zoombrowser still says camerawindow does not recognize the camera. as for the name in the camera yes I did that long ago when I got it using zoombrowser of course. looks like zb is useless now except to look at what Ive already downloaded. eos utility did appear to open zb and downloaded the pics so I am confused. why wont it work by itself? it used to

Anyway I can at least use the Utility program so thanks to all for your help. You can even get into the camera exif and change the owner name with it if you want. The only thing I evern found zb useful for was showing the focus points but I just wanted it to work whether I needed it or not. You know how that goes. Now if I can just get my camera to take pictures that are level as what I see in the vf and not tilted like what I get. Maybe I can get in there with a tire iron and move the sensor.
