Why did Canon discontinue it? Is it because it had lead in it like the 50/1.0L and 200/1.8L?

Canon's most expensive non L lens would be either the 70-300 f4.5-5.6 DO @$1144.95 (B & H pricing) or the 45 and 90 mm Tilt & Shift lenses @ 1069.95 (also B & H pricing). The previously mentioned 17-55 f2.8 IS is only $999.95
It might be argued that the 70-300 DO is a l class lens as the other DO lens is designated L. WMS

I heard somewhere that the Zeiss lens in post 11 was ordered by an anonymous oil sheikh [or relative thereof] who has it mounted [gyrostabilised] on a 4 wheel drive so that he can take photos of his hunting falcons in flight

I don't see why L lenses shouldn't be counted as consumer lenses. Professionals are also consumers, are they not?
Technically, anyone who's willing to shell out money for a product is a consumer. Therefore, any lens is a consumer lens if it is sold to someone.

Size isn't everything... aparently
I often wonder about the tag 'consumer' lens - I am a 'consumer' and I have one 'L' a Sigma 'EX' and a few ' others', so am I a consumer or a semi-pro?

yes, everyone is a consumer. but when you're talking about different grades of consumers - professionals, semi-professionials, hobbyists. and when we talk about consumers here, we're referring mainly to non-professionals.

So can I use the neckstrap on my 350D with a 1200 attached, or do I need bearers, like an old Tarzan movie?

Generally, I thought a L designated lens was a professional grade lens for their optics AND build quality. Gold stripe lenses are consumer grade. I would think the 17-55mm 2.8 IS may be the most expensive consumer grade lense. Almost $1,000 and you don't even get a hood. Before I get nailed by the 17-55mm owners, you must admit the build quality of that lens in not up to L standards. ( I own the 24-105L and have bought/sold the 17-55).
