That's certainly not true on the 20/30D-- if the finish wears off, it wears off to reveal the metal body. I don't know about the rebel.

Yes the enamel can wear off. It takes a bit of doing though so I wouldn't call it "delicate."

It's a polycarbonate shell. I never wore my black XT down but the silver one was black underneath if I recall correctly. It's been awhile though so don't hold me to that.

tsaraleksi is correct. Although the 20D and 30D are not totally metal, the main body housing is magnesium and can be seen from the attached image. For a good description of the body and indeed everything else concerning the camera, visit dpreview.com.

I suspect that if you damage your camera enough to warrant replacing the body, it's time for a new camera.
I don't know why, but this kinda reminds me of the famous photo from the Vietnam War showing a Nikon SLR with a bullet hole right straight down the lens, depicting the price paid by combat reporters. Last edited by 20droger : 15th of July 2007 (Sun) at 18:33. |

My 20D gets some firm use and I've never had any difficulty with bits wearing down.. I wouldn't describe it as delicate. If you were to sit there and actively scratch it or bash it against a few things I don't doubt you could get down to what's under the outer layer.

where I held the camera on my 350d the enamel wore off and it was a darkish grey underneath. I don't have pictures and cant easily take any as my fiance now has the camera, but it took me about 1.5 years to rub it away with pretty constant use. Cant say it was anything that worried me at all.
