Default Metz 58 - Canon compatible version: no firmware to fix off camera triggering (update

Just heard from Bogen Imaging and here is the quote:

Greetings,
Thanks for the inquiry regarding the Metz 58 AF-1. If you own a Canon version of the flash, it is unable to fire from a Pocket Wizard and there is no firmware update coming that will allow this to happen. It is a hardware issue, not a firmware issue. If you own the Nikon version of the 58 AF-1, you can use it with a Pocket Wizard right now. It requires a PC to Hot Shoe Adapter (Kalt makes one found at most photo dealers) & a minipohone male to PC Female adapter (sold by Pocket Wizard - cat # 80-4-605).

Regards, and thanks for choosing Metz.

There you have it. I am going to sell mine and get a Nikon version because I really like the secondary reflector.

Pat

You know, on second thought, I am not going to sell mine, but keep it as my on camera, or at least off camera with the TTL cord from canon and use the 580 as the PW triggered flash. I am going to check out Michael Bass about getting an extended TTL cord (at least 10ft. worth).

generally i dont care if metz wouldnt fix it with 58th. there're cheap flashes on market you can trigger remotely.

Yeah, I really don't like the idea of hassling to get dedicated units working remotely non-dedicated. Once I've got me another old Nikon speedlight, I thoroughly intend to keep my 580EX around solely for on-camera use.

Update: I heard from the Metz support in Germany and the story is different now. It is a firmware issue and here is the skinny right from them:

From support...
Many thanks for your e-mail inquire. A new software dedicated to a 58 AF-1 C (it must be a Canon version) is in planning allowing to use them with a pocket wizzard. Also, a download of this software needs a special up-date of your home page which is stilll not provided as well. Both, this new 58 software as well as our up-dated home page will be available round about September. Unfortunately, an exact date of availibility is still not provided. But, I will store your e-mail to inform you as soon as we have a solution.

best regards

Lutz Goeschel
Technical support

I guess we will see.
