Unhappy Remind me to never not bring my camera again!

I just took my 2 and a half year old to the park to play ball. He loves throwing the basketball around and 'trying' to get a basket. Anyway, these three fire fighters show up in their big red truck. They were there on break waiting to get the floors waxed in the fire house. They came up to us and gave us two badges - one for both of my sons. My son was too shy to communicate, but we wound up going into their truck to check it out. It was pretty cool. They played basketball with our ball while Matthew and I were checking out their fire garb. He was really interested in the helmets and made the siren sound (he's in speech therapy and sometimes has a noise for things instead of a word). I shot the sh&t with them for a little while about a couple of recent fires. They had to keep trucking water over to a million dollar home b/c there were no hydrants around, so we heard them about 100 times one night. To make this long story short, should've had the camera. Could've gotten some REALLY cute pics. I didn't bring it to spare my son from the agony of being photographed again.

Sometimes it is better to participate then to shoot. I have to remind myself that every now and then. I bet your kids had more fun because you didn't bring the camera and instead were more tuned in to what was going on. It's OK.

What drives me crazy is the wildlife that pops up whenever I don't have my camera. My in-laws live in Muskoka (nice lake area north of Toronto) and it seems every time I drive around for other reasons e.g. to chainsaw something or do some work I see deer, fox, even wild turkeys (rare that far north). I know I should always carry camera but if I do...nothing..plus carrying the camera in a dirty pickup truck when you're out to do work can be a bit of a pain. Maybe I need a holster-style bag with a dashboard mount!

Yeah, but you know you wouldn't have had the RIGHT lens if you brought the camera anyway, lol. That always happens to me too. At least now I only have 2 lenses to choose from.

Although I do have zooms,so I'd have more of a chance (for those who haven't followed there were pages of deliberations over lens choice followed by purchase of L primes).....actually I just noticed the signature...please tell me you didn't just change all your lenses again...or is it time to update the sig?

Edit: post was made before above comment by Mike - I also didn't realize the two lens thing: that was awfully quiet considering the deliberations prior to the prime decision...do tell

Yep, quiet on purpose! Didn't want to get into debates again. I posted a "you were right, I was wrong" thread already about it. Anywho... next subject... lol. I am over the lens changing though now. No, seriously, for real. Offered to take my originally purchased zooms back, but they said no. Had to send brand new ones. Done though. Happy now. Story over.

Wow. Are you seriously doing a search for it? You honestly don't believe me? This just gets weirder and weirder. It was at the Talk about Photography forum or the People forum, I don't recall which. Someone noticed I'd made the switch and I mentioned I was keeping it low key, yada, yada... If someone else can find it, please post it so we can let this rest!

I seem to recall reading something about it in this thread.

Thanks much Simon. It may be in another thread as well. To be honest, I don't completely remember...

No problem Mum. And don't worry, the silliness will die down soon enough and you'll be back to shooting your kids in peace in no time (in other words, don't let the peanut gallery get to you ).

OP reminds me of the old "Murphy's three laws of photography."

Law #1> perfect scene, but no camera
Law #2> perfect scene, have camera, wrong film
Law #3> perfect scene, have camera and film, but - you're in the darkroom when somebody opens the door and lets all the dark leak out (ruining the film).

(Somebody should update this for digital.)

Law #2> perfect scene, have camera, no CF card
Law #3> perfect scene, have camera and CF card, but - you're transferring the files to computer when you have a power brownout that corrupts the CF card.
