Default A good lens and a grip

Hi,

I took some advice that I would need a good L class lens and a grip to get me on the road.

Puchased them and raring to go....what do you press to take the picture?

PS...there's something called a 30D in the post...not sure what it is exactly but hopefully it will help.

Bob

you'll need to mount that on a tank, insert the firing pin and put it to 'Semi'.
Congrats on the new purchase... TWO 70-200s huh?

I think I've cracked the problem.....that lens and grip are clearly on a tree stump and not on 'the road'.

Hope that helps.

Aren't you glad you got that grip? Your rig looks way more professional now.

I really wish Canon would make the grip white for that lens so it would match. Talk about a fashion issue.

LOL....you don't have to press anything to take a picture. Just remember to take off the lens cap!!

yeah, I too wonder why Canon only makes telephoto L lenses white. It's like once you get past 135mm, they go from color matched to contrasting white.

Isn't it for the heat or something? White absorbing less heat, which gives less distortion?

Or is it just because it looks frigging cool?

Well the lenses in general do look much better then their Nikon counterparts (which actually are black)!

But I don't believe they're white for a heat issue.....I mean both Canon and Nikon make black camera bodies that absorb heat and could mightily screw up the guts of the camera if it gets too hot. Glass at least can have high tolerances...AFAIK.

I'm sure the white is a bit of a status symbol thing. However, there is something with white serving a purpose. Not all Ls are white because not all Ls have the the flourite (sp?) glass which is more subject to uneven thermal expansion. Anyone please confirm. After all, there are white N*kon lenses for this very reason, from what I have seen.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, there are white Noink, Minolta and Olympus lenses. But it's not specifically the fluorite - a number of the shorter, non-white, lenses have fluorite elements; it's the large size of the elements and the vast amounts of material that may expand when hot. Try putting a white Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and a black Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 out in the sun on a warm day and see how hot each feels after an hour or so. At least one member's posted on here about having his black camera IIRC and white L out with him - the camera got too hot to touch but the L was still tolerable.

Your hypothesis could be true....I have no way of knowing. It does seem like there is a lot of mystic surrounding fluorite crystals! So some feel that since they're crystals, they may not react well to heat. I've also heard a rumor that the reason NASA doesn't use Canon cameras is because of fluorite in L lenses would shatter from lift off. Well especially with that claim, I'm skeptical. More then likely, they're a government institution that sees no reason to switch from Nikon.

Just as anecdotal evidence, I found a spec sheet of Canon lenses. It does look like all the Ls that have fluorite are white.....but not all white lenses have fluorite. I love my 135mm L, which apparently uses UD elements. Even though it's all black, it looks gorgeous on the 5D: that red ring is a striking accent. You don't get that with the white lenses.....but it does make the black focus ring grips look cool.

and PS about leaving your gear out in the sun all day.....yeah, my black camera doesn't get that hot because I'd poop out from extreme heat before my camera will
