the red bull air race is coming to san diego september 21st and 22nd.
i'll be out there with my guns loaded. i currently only reach to 200. i was thinking about commandeering another lens for this event. i'm torn between the: canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS or sigma(bigma) 50-500 f/4-6.3 here's the site map. i'll most likely be shooting from the coronado side as the spectator viewing areas will most likely be crowded and aren't even in the greatest location what's the verdict?

Go with the Canon! I can't stress enough! I had the Bigma, and while a great lens, even on the brightest day the it won't match the performance of the Canon you mentioned. Use an extender for a longer reach, and it will still act faster with the IS, than the Bigma.

Id go with the bigma for the extra 100mm. I don't see the need for IS at an air race.

lol he asks for help and gets two posts that are complete opposite. lol...
my opinion - is use your 70 - 200 and buy a 2x extender. that way you have 520mm at f8 shoot at f 16 - 20 any ways using shutter speed to either freeze the action for sharp shots or have the blurred movement of the props (shutter speed of 200 will be good for this) . or if want to buy a lens get the 300mm 2.8 L prime.. and a 2x.

Personally, if I go, I'll be using the 100-400, with possibly a 1.4X extender.

For jets you would be right, but these are props and IS will help.

This is a new sport so I think there will be some testing of lenses / approach to shotting it. Good luck all and I can not wait to see the results.

I leave SD this Monday for Australia. I was hoping to catch this as well, but unfortunately I won't be able to. If you want a clearer sky to backdrop the planes, shoot from the city side, otherwise you may lose the planes (as they're so low) in the building details. I'd also aim more towards setting up towards the start and shooting down the course towards the Coronado Bridge, especially later in the day so the sun will be at your back.
