Default Gone Fishin'

I'm posting this here because I consider it more of a landscape than anything. First image post for me, looking for C&C. I'm pretty thick skinned, so constructive criticism, no matter how brutal, is always welcome.

Thanks,
Bill W. Davis

Nice.

I like shooting at ISO 100 but why were you at f4?

I would have stopped the lens down to maybe f11.

What lens were you shooting with?

I was at f4 due to my age ; I had been shooting some shots before @ f4 intentionally and forgot to flip back to something smaller.

Shot w/ Sigma 28-70 f2.8.

Hi Bill

Thanks for posting. I'll try to give some 'constructive' criticism as I see it of the above image - take with the usual grain of salt.

Firstly, since the title is 'Gone Fishin', and my eye goes straight to the guy in the boat, I'm think'n that this is the 'subject' of the landscape? If that's the case, then as a subject it's way too small in the frame, and needs to be more prominent. That means getting closer - either with a zoom lens - or a boat of your own.

Second, I would crop out about a third from the bottom of the image - it's just plain water and wasted space with nothin much happening. This crop would make it a more 'panoramic' shot, and probably suit the composition of the image more.

Third, the light is pretty average as well. Not much going on here either. I'm guessing it's mid dayish light - just about the most boring light you can get for any kind of photography. Hey, I realise you have to take them when you are there - so how about getting there a lot earlier - or a lot later. Early morning or late evening light is the bees knees for landscapes and anything else just pales in comparison.

There isn't really a story happening here - at least not one that's being told convincingly - it comes across as a 'snapshot' that doesn't jump out at me and grab my attention. Lots of famous photographers have said 'get close' to a subject to tell a story, and it's pretty solid advice. Then it's all about light, light, light.

Hope that helps?

I think it doesnt matter whos got it right, Profi photos are at the end, down to the eye of the beholder, photography id say even the profi's are still learning, but what the hell everyone is entitled to an opinion. Hey great stuff......

Admitingly the pic has nothing to it, only that u see a load of trees and someone fishing on a boat, but u took it for a reason and that reason would be pleasure cuz u liked the scene or you are still trying new things.... Keep it up we all get there in the end....
