Default Sigma 150mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM Macro

Ok I was really sold on the Canon 100mm Macro, but then I stumbled upon the Sigma 150mm. I am now convinced that I should get the Sigma. Most DSLR's are APS-C and it occurred to me that many of the positive comments about the Canon are from folks that shoot with these cameras at comparatively longer lengths. I suspect on my FF 5D I would be wishing for the longer reach and the Sigma seems like a stellar piece of glass. Interestingly the Sigma Canon EF mount is Sold Out at B&H. Hmmmm.

I own both the Sigma 150 and the Canon 100 Macro and I have only used the Sigma on a few occasions. I bought the Sigma for the longer reach as I was hoping to start using a non-ring flash as most people seem to think that the lighting is better.

However, I just love my Canon 100 macro, combined with the Ringlite for ease of use and if you would live in the UK I could offer you a Sigma and a Wimberly flash bracket for a great price, used only a few times, box included.

One day I might have another go.

Think I'm right in thinking that two of the macro shooters here have got rid of their sigma 150s in favour of shorter macro lenses. The sigma 150 is an excellent lens but harder to use in the field without a tripod than a 60mm-100mm macro lens.

Its a fine lens but I traded mine as I found it too heavy to hand hold on small subjects at 1:1 I think working distance is overrated as opposed to lightness. I'd rather stalk with a 60mm than try to hand hold a longer lens.

I own this great lens, and have taken many hand-held shots with it. It is an absolutely wonderful lens. I am now using the MP-E65(wanted to go beyond 1 to 1)(and my wife took control of it) but, I still love my 150. I have never had a problem hand holding the Sigma 150 mounted to my 5D.

In addition, you might want to ask this question in the macro forum. I have been looking at this lens as well and am interested to see the responses. Good luck with whatever you choose.

If you are thinking of selling the Sigma 150 macro drop me a PM as I'm considering getting one. I currently use the Sigma 105 f2.8 but fancy trying the 150 macro.

I've never had a problem handholding mine, especially with a flash. I certainly wouldn't want anything shorter on a full frame camera.
