Hello,
I'm new to this forum, so if this question has been posted already, or I've put it in the wrong forum, please accept my apologies! I've been perusing the People section on these forums, and I have a question regarding posting pictures of people (for example, at sporting events). Does the photographer need to ask permission to the subject(s) before he/she posts a picture on here? Especially if the subject(s) are minors? I've seen alot of pictures with teenagers (volleyball, soccer, etc.) posted, and am wondering if there are rules/guidelines on getting consent to post their pics. As a parent, I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with pictures of my children being posted on the Internet without my knowing about it. If I'm being paranoid about this, please let me know. I know hardly anything about the realm of digital photography, but since I just purchased my first DSLR (Canon Rebel XT), I'm eager to learn as much as possible! Thanks. |

You are not being paranoid about this and it was right of you to ask. However, this topic has been covered quite a bit on here. You might want to search the forums for answers first and then pose a question. That being said, it pretty much boils down to what you plan on doing w/ the images. If you are planning on selling them, a release is a pretty good idea, if not required. If people are on public property, they are fair game. You have the right to photograph them to your heart's content. However, discretion should be used at all times. I wouldn't be snapping pics of a bunch of little kids at the playground and then scurry off. If you were getting pics of my kids, you can bet I'd track you down and figure out what's going on. Oh, welcome to POTN.

Sorry about that. I did search the FAQs, thinking it was there, and couldn't find it. I'll take another look for it.
Thanks for the response. |

Here's a good link if you're in the UK: http://www.sirimo.co.uk/ukpr.php
Or in the U.S.A: http://www.krages.com/phoright.htm I think the general rule of thumb is that if the people are in a public place, you are ok to photograph them and publish the images if they are for editorial use, except in countries that have strict privacy laws like France, for example, where you would need to get a Model Release form. PS, don't worry about asking questions, even if they have been asked hundreds of times! Happy shooting.

I agree about asking. My teacher always used to tell us that the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked. I proved her wrong!!!
