Default auto exposure questions for s330

Hi everyone - just purchased an s330 this evening and, having graduated from an s100 this new camera certainly has many more bells and whistles!

I am trying to determine the best time to use

1. auto exposure lock
2. flash exposure lock
3 Is AE spot light metering the same as auto exposure lock?
Is any of this making sense?

Also - what seems to work better.. I am used to NOT having AFiF and the three squares across my LCD screen. But, does it truly work better?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!
