Default Sunshine Fleet

Ok, it's not a fleet -- in fact the only thing fleeting is the sun -- but I know the value of an interesting headline. Outside my window in Clear Water Bay it's raining buckets at the moment and I'm posting this picture to mark the fact that Hong Kong is entering its rainy season.

This shot of Victoria Harbour was taken from the verandah of the Bistro at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Causeway Bay -- one of the few royal things left in this former colony.

The Hong Kong Observatory website informs me that "The wettest month is August, when rain occurs about four days out of seven and the average monthly rainfall at the Observatory is 391.4 millimetres."

It goes on to advise that "September is the month during which Hong Kong is most likely to be affected by tropical cyclones, although gales are not unusual at any time between May and November. On average, about 31 tropical cyclones form in the western North Pacific or China Seas every year, and about half of them reach typhoon strength (maximum winds of 118 kilometres per hour or more)."

On that note I'll offer a product recommendation -- a Guy Larouche umbrella. I bought two in Tokyo for about US$35 each. Besides being beautiful, they have 16 ribs instead of the usual 8, making them a little sturdier in a stiff wind.

Cheers,

Don

Hi Don

This is a wonderful photo.
Thanks for sharing.

Your info from the Weather Bureau makes interesing
reading. I'm surprised that the Dept of Tourism
hasn't had them shut down.

Hi Hal,

The government outranks the tourism department -- which is why we're struggling with two city identities at the moment. The government believes we're "Asia's World City" while the Hong Kong Tourism Board thinks we're the "City of Life."

Visitors just think we're schizophrenic.

Sorry, I guess it is just me but I can't see the photograph in your mesage.

Could you please post the URL also?

Thanks.

I guess they will think so.

Hi Griffin,

No need... after initially uploading the photo, I checked it on Leela's computer a day later and decided it was a bit oversharpened, so I put in a new link -- incorrectly. I've fixed it now.

Looking through my other shots more carefully, I found another photo that's probably better...

Cheers,

Don

Don,

Thank you very much. You know, I am bumping my chest right now. When are these excellent pictures taken? How come I could possibly miss them?

Thank you again for sharing.

Regards.

If y'all don't mind, I'll put up one answer here to keep the forum tidy...

Actually, we look forward to the rainy season since it signifies a welcome break to the summer heat. It's still hot, but not quite so hot, and it's a reminder that September and October are on their way. And you DO have beautiful scenery... I lived in Port Angeles, Washington, for two years and every morning I would get up and look over the strait to make sure you were still there. Thanks for your comment.

I take them when your back is turned -- or when you're staying indoors because the sun isn't out. Thanks, as always, for commenting.

With this sort of impartial, informed judgement, you're always welcome to join in. Thank you -- that's very kind.

Best to all of you,

Don

Ha, you are getting arragonant, aren't you? :P I am very fond of this kind of scene but I have never taken anything near yours. I admire that.

See ya around -- wait, could I recon you if we ever met? Just a thought.

I hope not... that would definitely lower my lovability quotient.

Thanks, Griffin, but as you know, half of photography is luck.

Sure... I'll be the best-looking one on the bus -- assuming it's just the two of us. 8)

Cheers,

Don

Okay, could I just print it out and carry it whenever I leave home? I guess it would be easier for me.

Regards.
