Challenge #95 - Speed
Having looked through the challenges so far, I noticed nobody had covered speed. You can follow the subject, blurring the background, or you can have the subject blurred - whatever takes your whim. Night or day. Just give us the effect of speed. Cars that look like they are stood still on a racetrack aren't going to cut the mustard Good Luck chaps ________________________________ To submit, click "Post Reply" and put your Photo Name in the Subject Line. Okay I'll go first - be gentle. Picture is relatively grainy because I was firing at 2.5 fps to catch the shotgun cycling with the empty hull in the air. This was part of a stage in which 8 targets were engaged in 3 seconds or less. S3IS 1/800 @F8.

Ok..first try. Powershot S200, iso 50, minor PP work done. Just me driving in my BMW tried to get the reflection in the rear view a little sharper. Alas a complete lack of manual controls on the old Elph reared it's ugly head.

Op, you didn't mention whether G series are allowed. You just said no Pro 1 series, so I'll post this, but if you want to delete it that's fine.

Fast and sideways
![]() Canon S2 IS Manual mode (or Tv) Shutter speed: 1/160 Aperture: F8 ISO 50 Exposure: -2EV Focal length: 28mm Post-processing: resize, levels, some saturation and sharpening. Shot at Driftmania Montreal last year. Not easy to capture speed with a slow shutter speed on a very bright day with my S2. Even when pushing the settings to the max, I couldn't get a slower shutter speed without overexposing. There's still some blur in the wheels though. Maybe not the fastest around, but still a quick thrill.

G series are in the forum below this one david, they have POTN challenges running as well. Also I should add, your dimentions are wrong for entries, requiring 800px on the longest side.

Fraser Island forest track
S3 IS Auto The long shutter exposure gives the illusion of speed.

Thank you everyone for entering this challenge. I must say there are some really good entries this week. I was keen to see how people would put their setting to effective use on this once since I know it can be awkward to capture the effect of speed/movement.
In FIRST Place, mainly due to just how darn nice the shot is, JEECE, with Fast and sideways. Following a car, keeping it crisp while capturing the wheel motion AND slightly blurred background is a singular skill my friend, and this is one AMAZING shot, made all the better by the light-glint on the chrome alloys. If you would consider writing up a small tutorial on how you achieved this shot i'd be most interested. In SECOND Place, MICKY DEAEUS with his Fraser Island forest track. LOVE this shot, mainly because it does provide the feeling of motion uphill, but without any camera shake to destroy the steadiness of the hood in the foreground; another hard trick to master right there. I wonder how many times you drove up the hill to get the right shutter speed and exposure ? This is exactly the type of shot I was hoping to see. In THIRD Place, Edd S with his Speeding Along sports shot. Again, moving targets, blurred background showing speed and movement, blurred legs. A terrific shot -=-=- I like to have a go myself at my own challeneges just to see if other people have a better technique - this time, they most certainly do, here is my awful attempt at a sports shot, showing speed of some kind. ![]() Thankfully, my light trails had more success

Congrats Jeece. Great shot.
BTW, Bboi, that girl is my daughter! And I'm not so sure you could catch her anyway - as you can see from the picture! |

If I remember correctly, here's what I did: kept my elbows close to my body, stuck the camera to my eye and pre-focused the area the car will be. It's better to use the viewfinder than the LCD while holding the camera at arms length. There's less chance of up and down movement/blur. Then I adjusted the exposure in Tv Mode. I couldn't get any slower speed without overexposing but it still turned good. When the car came close, I started following it before it reached the point I previously focused. At this point, still turning my upperbody, *click* while continuing to pan. It helps if you set your Image Stabilisation option to the Panning position (I remember I forgot this at some point during the event, but I don't know which IS setting this particular picture was taken with). My participation in the challenges (well, shooting pictures as well) have declined a lot for the last 2-3 months. Here's another shot of the same event I thought of submitting for this challenge, but the busy background and weird composition weren't that good (as opposed to my winning entry). Though the smoke adds a lot to the cool factor. ![]() Stay tuned for the next challenge, I'm thinking about it...

Congratulations to the winners...and the judge. I would have had a hard time choosing between them.
