Question Tripod Attachment for Strobe Flash?

I have a 480EX and a 580EX flash, so i can start using one as a slave. How do i attach one to a tripod? I'm just not sure how to search for what i want in the massive B&H archives (or elsewhere).

You need a umbrella adapter.

Be sure to get one with the proper adapters that will allow you to use it on a tripod or a lightstand.

Enjoy! Lon

Just thought of another tripod attachment question too ..... or monopod, in this case ..... i have been photographing many aspects of ski areas, including action skiing, for the past few years .... just semi-professionally. When i first had my big lens on the monopod, and attempting to get my ski racer child on the race course FROM THE SIDE ... i suddenly discovered that i needed an attachment on my monopod that would allow me to swivel and tilt. All my other work is getting the skiiers to ski towards me, when i'm working with the 300 & the monopod, so those aren't a problem ... but i'd like to take a stab at re-venturing into following the skiier as he goes by me, and on down the hill while working with the 300 set-up.

Can anyone enlighten me on this, also? Thanks!

Thanks Lon, but when i was doing some stringing for the newspaper a couple of years back, i went with my boss to a couple of assignments and saw him use his other flash with no umbrella ..... it seemed very simple. He just had it bounce off the ceiling, or a nearby wall. This is what i'm thinking of ... i like simple! But please enlighten me further as to why i need the umbrella adaptor (i'm assuming that includes the umbrella?)

Canon flashes come with a foot stand which the hotshoe slides into. Look on the bottom of the stand, it can be attached to a standard tripod.

The commonly used umbrella adapter is just a general device for attaching hotshoe based flash to a tripod or a lightstand.

You can use them with or without an umbrella.

There is no photographic umbrella included with an umbrella adapter.

They are also called a swivel bracket, but it is the same item.

Enjoy! Lon
