they are flares. alot of demo teams use them because they are pretty and they are also used to draw heat seaking missle attacks away from the aircraft.

You're right when you say they are flares, but Demo Teams do NOT shoot flares on public displays. This is a matter of safety as the flares are not your average pyrotechnics, and as you correctly state their primary purpose is to defeat heat-seeking missiles. I suspect that these shots were taken over a closed military firing range.

I think you will find that in Europe and Asia demo teams DO shoot flares at Airshows, although the ones posted by Gyrob were taken on Donna Nook range

I've only seen flares at live air power demos not for basic demos but they do fire them with onlookers. (usually only Senators, Mayors, Family members and other DV's)

i agree with you and that is what I was trying to get across, especially for the reason Spectre states - the fire risk.
