Question suggestions for upcoming shoot?

I've been asked to do a family portrait shoot this weekend, and I was hoping to get some suggestions from POTN members about composition, etc. The family consists of three people (mom, dad, 2yo) and we'll be doing the shoot outdoors (there's snow on the ground, btw). They'd like some "formal" shots as well as some fun ones. We are close friends with this family, so pressure isn't too high, but of course I want to get the best possible results for them.

My gear consists of 30D, 85 F1.8, 580EX, 70-200 F2.8 non IS, 28-135 IS. I also have a large reflector if needed (white/silver), as well as a Stofen thingie for the 580EX.

Since there's snow on the gound which will likely be part of the composition, I'm expecting to have to dial in some +EC (I normally shoot at +1/3EC, so likely will start at around +1EC and chimp the histogram). The weather forcast is cold and partly cloudy (with a chance of flurries). The shoot will take place at 9am.

I've never done an outdoor, winter portrait/fun shoot like this before, so was hoping to get some composition and gear selection suggestions. My gear selection thoughts lean toward using the 85mm for that extra special bokeh and excellent IQ. The 70-200 could also be a good option, I think, but would really need to keep an eye on shutter speed. I also have a monopod for use with the 70-200 to help avoid camera shake.

I've been a struggling amateur 'tog for just over a year now, but I think I'm really starting to get a solid handle on the technical side of things. My real concern is on the composition side of the house. I'm just not a very creative person to start with, so I find it difficult to envision the shots I want ahead of time.

Any/all suggestions appreciated! Some quick sample images from a similar "environment" would be a super helper too. Thanks!

Cheers,

T.J.
