I wanted to take the 101 north all the way to Astoria to check out the two big parks near the bridge. But I ran out of time, it got dark and it's still a long drive back to Vancouver, BC not WA

Well you will have your hands full with the 11+ lighthouses on the Oregon Coast!
You really should take time to check out Fort Stevens State Park. One of the best parks in Oregon. Fort Clatsop National Monument is also cool, but to me (I live 4 miles from it and have lived here for 15 years), I don't think it is as exciting as Fort Stevens, though that might be because I have been to it so many times The other park you might be talking about when you say "by the bridge" is Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington. This one has a very photogenic lighthouse that gets some awesome storm action that make great photos (its still active so that's a plus). This is probably my favorite park in the North West with lots of trails that lead to 300+ foot cliffs with amazing views. The Bald Eagles nest in the old growth trees on the cliffs and offer awesome opportunities for fly-by shots along the cliff faces. Photographically, this park is best visited in storm weather because of the huge swells that hit the cliffs and also the storm seas you can see hitting the North and South Jetties. ![]() This photo means a lot to me. It was probably one of the worst days I've ever had the company I worked for was going to let me go because my photos just didn't have the pop that they did when they first hired me "there words". I was contemplating about just quitting and flying home at this race. I Photograph from 7am till 5pm with a few 10min breaks and shoot about 2000 images in one work day. I have my Rstrap and usually two mark iii's 300mm 2.8 and a 70-200 and two other lenses in my vest along with a flash and battery pack and 6 bottles of water seeing how it is 90 plus outside during my work season. But in the end I figured out that i was trying to hard and it was causing me to get into this photo funk. All is well and fortunately employed by the same outlet

Happy that you're still employed with them. Going out with those words from them would've been hard.
I can see why this is so close to you |

Been contemplating a similar getup to shoot some backwater and wetland areas around where I live (Ohio River Valley), but am nervous about getting camera wet. Any problems with rollover?? I have never used a kyak. Maybe I should stick to flat bottom johnboats.

You will be amazed at how much closer you will be able to get to wildlife in a kayak VS in a bigger boat. ![]()

I've really wanted to move up to one of the Hobie kayaks that has the pedals so my hands can stay free to hold the camera.
I notice that while in my kayak, the only thing that spooks the wildlife is me paddling. If I just float along, they never even acknowledge that I'm floating past them |
