Default Help: Reset image counter

I must have taken a card from my D30 and put it in my 10D for the counter on the 10D is messed up (about 6500 more images than it has taken).

I have tried to reset the counter by renaming the folder and an image in the folder but the camera seems to remember where it left off.

Any way to get the number to reset? I don't want to start at 0001 because that is not a true number for my 10D. I figured I have taken about 1030 images and don't care if I reset it to 1050 or even 1200. But I have not taken 7600 images since March and my folders are showing about 1028 (this will not count images taken and then deleted from the 10D - which is why I can live with 1100 images on the counter.

The last good image count I have is 689 and I have added up the images I have on my HD.

Can anyone help me please?

TonyK

Hi Tony,

I think you're on the right track but you might be missing a step. If I remember when I dealt with this problem you have to adjust the file numbering on the camera before reinserting the CF card containing the revised file number. The camera keeps track of the last file number internally - when you insert a CF card it compares this file number to the number on the card and defaults to the higher of the two. In your case the camera is comparing the higher, incorrect file number in its memory to the lower file number you have adjusted on your CF card and then defaulting to the higher number. I hope this makes sense. Sorry for the lack of technical direction but I'm at work and don't have access to my gear.

Regards,
Jim

Hello Jim and Tony. I am having the same problem with my 10D. I attended a trade show and used one of my flash cards in a demo camera that had about 9600 on the counter. Now my 10D has 9600 instead of 4500 on the counter. I want to reset it but I'm not understanding the order of operations you described. If you could list them in point form for me (because I'm obviously a bone-head) I would be very grateful.

Thank-you.

Underground-

Let me tell you what I did to fix this on the 20D (Should be similar on the 10D). It might seems alittle "out of the way" or there might be a better method, but this is that I did to get the numbers back.
1. Take your primary CF card and format it on your computer.
2. Next go to your camera and WITHOUT putting the CF card in turn on the camera and go to the menu. In the menu there should be an item called File Numbering or something to that effect. Your is probably set to "continuous", you will need to change it to "Auto Reset" (on the 20D).
3. Once you have changed the File Numbering setting to Auto Reset, place your formated CF Card into the camera and take a picture. The Picture you just took should be labeled something like 100-0001 if you review the image on the cameras LCD.
4. Once you have taken a picture go back to the menu and change the File Numbering setting back to continuous.
5. After changing the file numbering setting you can turn off the camera (Or plug the camera into your computer depending if you have a card reader or use the camera to transfer your images to your computer).
6. Find the image folder on your CF card under the "My Computer" section of windows (Sorry, this is an explination for windows only, I dont have a MAC so I can't give specific info on that).
7. Once you find your CF card and the Image folder, the image folder should be 100CANON, and inside should be a file of CRW_0001.XXX (for RAW files - I dont remeber what the file extension is right now that is why there are XXX at the end)
8. Now all you need to do is find the last image you shot before the counting was messed up and place it in that 100CANON folder on your CF card (you might be able to just rename the picture you just shot to the desired number but I didnt do it that way so I cant tell you if that will work or not) So lets say your last shot before the numbers flipped out was a RAW image of number 4574. So you would find file CRW_4574.XXX and copy that to the CF card. Then you will want to erase the new picture you just shot CRW_0001.XXX. After that, rename the image folder to the appropriate number (100CANON is for images 0001-0100, so for image 4574 the folder would be 145CANON)
9. Once you have changed the name on the folder and replaced the 0001 image with your correct number pic, go ahead and reinsert the CF card into the camera (or unplug the camera from the computer if you are not using a card reader) and go take a picture. The next picture should be numbered correctly and now your camera is back to the correct numbering. After all that you can go ahead and format the card inside the camera and you will be ready to shoot!

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or corrections let me know! Good luck!!!
