Default Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS

Any of shots of the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DO IS ? Seems like an interesting lens concept, I'd like to hear and see some member feedback.

There's no Archive on this one yet? Wow.

For what it is, ie< a very compact yet very well built mid to long range zoom, it is one of the best.
It has remarkably fast AF, and excellent 2nd Gen IS,.
The DO optics are not quite as contrasty or as saturated as conventional glass, but it's still very good.

That is what I said. There is a "review" but only a few pics in it.

Pictures from my recent trip to Kauai. The 70-300 DO saw very little use. I wanted to decide whether the DO is worth keeping or whether I should be looking for another lens.

While the DO is compact, once you decide to always add the hood (a must), you lose the stealth factor. If the image quality is also crap, the lens is a lose lose in all ways as far as I am concerned.

However, following the sticky on this site, and trying to use better long-lens techniques (press face into viewfinder, always try to get as high a shutter speed as possible etc) and processing well with Lightroom (Use "Clarity" heavily >= 60 usually and a lot of sharpening which the DO images tolerate very well) *and* using white balance from the whibal card (shooting raw of course), I did get good photos. I also did try to use the lens at f/8.0 all the time, however as the difference between 5.6@300mm and 6.3/7.1/8.0@300 is remarkable.

I have added links to the full resolution images for those that want to look at the 100% crops.

DanteKing used to have this lens many, many moons ago and had some striking shots from it. Try and hunt it down with the search function, if they still exist. His shots are what interested me in buying one, but I ended up selling it to purchase a 300/4LIS.

Here is one I took recently with the 70-300 DO. This is straight from ACR without sharpening and cropped to as close to 100% as I could get it.

I just got this lens and I love it. I demo'd the 70-200L F4, but it was simply too big to carry around comfortably.

I'll try to be as helpful as possible here, by posting EXIF and 100% crops.

Here are some action shots followed by 100% crops:

It's a great lens and I know I'll regret selling mine, but I need a 2.8.

Tried the most difficult test for a handheld telephoto that I could think of - Jupiter and it's moons.

First pic was ISO 400 @ 1/10th of a second. I flinched...

No CA and any lens that you can handhold and resolve Jupiter and it's moons has to qualify as a keeper.

Crops are 200%.
