Default First Attempt at Off Camera Flash

First time trying off camera flash. Had the 580 set up with remotes trying to capture the riders coming through the trees.

Lots of trial and error but these are a few of the better ones.

More can be found at http://larryrosa.com/BASPS-5/

Trying to angle the flash and get the setting right took awhile.

Look forward to trying it again!

I tried shooting AV with manual flash, then set up the camera manual and manual flash.

Using mark2n with 28-70 2.8 lens.

Any comments and suggestions most welcome.

WOW! I might have to switch if that s how the pics will come out!!! Great snaps! Love being able to see the eyes of the athletes in sports pics! Shows true grit and passion for what they are trying to accomplish!

That first guy is pretty intense! I don't think you're going to have any trouble with your future shots if you can produce this on the first try.

Larry: Those are great photos, I know how fast they move and how hard it is to capture them in just the right spot. Makes my shots look like a a beginner with a brownie. Just moved the bar way higher.

Technical question:
1 How much different / adjusted is the exposure from the correct normal exposure are these photos ?

2. How many flashes where used and what was the flash output set to ?

3. What shutter speed did you use ? Panning ?

Thanks in advance
Rick

Awesome ! Well done.

If I'm one of those bikers and I see that high quality shot of me, I'm buying it. Nice work.

1 Flash 580 ex, on a stand I was also using those inexpensive Ebay remotes to learn on.

Photo 3 settings: shutter 1/200 - AV - 5.6, bumped it up 1/3 exposure and was shooting at 400. I kept changing the flash so I don't really remember what it was.

Photo 2 the same settings but had the shutter at 250

No Panning Just good timing.

I had my daughter run down the hill over and over so I can figure out where to aim the flash and dial in the settings.

The sun was coming through the trees on left shoulder so I set the flash further down the trail on the right or sun coming down on MY right, flash was camera left.

After this batch I didn't photograph much since payment to her was playground time for being my assistant

Larry: What flash angle to the bike did you find the most success? I would vote as well that #1 is the best of the group.

Thanks, I think that is the best also.

The issues I faced was do I put the flash above or below the barrier tape. If I did above then I get more face if below more legs and body.

I think for this one I faced the fash up the trail so that it would hit them at the spot that I was looking for, above the barrier, and a lot of trial and error.

Nice Cyclox pics. Where was this race at?

Off camera flash helps quite a bit and makes the lighting in the photo, if done right, seem flawless and natural.

It looks like the sun was providing you nice golden light, if not, I'm guessing you set your cameras WB to flash. The problem is, at least to me, the light from the flash does not balance as well as it could with the golden sunlight. Try getting a CLS gel ad putting it on your flash then set WB to custom or daylight and shoot away. The light from the flash will be golden like the sunlight and not the white-blue color typically produced.

WOW!!!! Outstanding shots! First off - CX is awesome.
Secondly - these are so well lit, they look more like they're from an ad shoot than an actual race.
