Holy crapoly!
I opened the image of the model in photoshop, the selected the crop tool, and entered a fixed size of 3000x2000 pixels, roughly the same res as the 300D. That only barely covered the area around her nose and eyes!

The portrait looks like it has some kind of soft focus effect on it - look at the highlight on her lip - its hazy
