It may be just a fancier name for 'digital zoom' I guess. Just another gimmick.

i was reading about it...what it does is it will mix your optical and digital zoom together to make it like 16x total. There is a feature that tells you when you have reached the optical limit of your zoom. So you can enable the feature and not use digital at all. However if you do need a quick zoom in, the option is there.

I think it's not the same as digital zoom. In the "standard digital zoom" mode, as you zoom into the subject, the camera first enlarge with its optical zoom. Once optical zoom reach its maximun, then digital zoom kicks in. In the "digital tele-converter" mode, the "standard digital zoom" mode is disable. All pictures receive digital zoomed at a certain preset rate, regardless of whether optical zoom is used.

As best I can tell, "Digital Teleconverter" applies a fixed amount of "Digital Zoom" to your pictures; it replicates the effect of attaching a 1.5x or 1.9x teleconverter to your lens, making it act like a (35 mm equivalent) 52-156 mm or 66-200 mm zoom. Of course, this comes with all the inherent disadvantages of digital zoom, so I'd generally avoid it if possible.

Yeah avoid anything 'digital' outside the camera, stick with good glass and stay optical.
