Twenty-eight lenses were nominated for inclusion in the poll, which in itself speaks for the strength of the Canon lens line-up, I believe.

This poll is purely subjective - the aim is to see if the community has a consensus view on which are the true gems among current Canon lenses, the ones where most people would nod their head if someone said "That's a great lens!", even if it is not perfect.

The criteria are for you, the voter to decide. They could include speed, precision and accuracy of focus, focal length range, build quality, IS, field flatness, value for money, weight, invariant maximum aperture, chromatic aberration, ... well - anything you like, really. Weight these as you see fit, and try to narrow it down to the single lens that is "best overall".

If you can't do that because you think several lenses really warrant the distinction, that's OK too. If I do it right, you should be able to vote for multiple lenses from the list, but bear in mind that voting for all of them would have the same effect on the outcome as not voting at all, so please be a little selective.

This is a secret ballot; your choices will not be displayed, although of course, you are free to discuss them in the thread.

Thanks for the nominations: let the voting commence.

For me, I would have to say #1 is the 50mm 1.8. It takes super sharp pictures, is very fast, and works well. AF is slow, but accurate most of the time, and the build quality is not the best, but not the worst either. Once you weigh in the price, nothing comes close IMO.

I also voted for a close #2 that is the 24-105L for me. Fast AF, Great build quality, Very Sharp and nice colors, and such a useful range for me (I dont miss wider than 24 at all on my crop camera).

I find the results interesting so far, there haven't been alot of votes but there is a gap between a few lenses and the rest of the pack - of the ones that are ahead there's only one non-L lens contending so far. It'll be interesting to see how the end results are and if the 17-55 F/2.8 IS is still contending with the cream of the crop.

The early surprise for me is the strong showing of the 300/2.8; not that I don't think it is worthy at all, just because it isn't one that I recall hearing people extol in the forums.

Thanks for that - I'm not sure if it is possible to edit the options once posted, but I'll see.

it's a tough question buy in my own opinion, nothing can beat the 100-400 for best overall. it is simply the most versatile lens in the canon line up and it is just brilliant and a joy to use.

:( A horrible thought has just occurred to me. This could come down to a run-off between the 24-70 and the 24-105, and that whole can on worms would be opened up yet again. Sorry folks.

Depends on your subjective interpretation of 'best overall' (most used? most sharp? most reliable?).. for me, I chose the 17-55 f/2.8 IS as the lens I find most useful. Or equivalently, the last lens I would sell suppose I was forced to sell off my lenses.

An interesting poll would be which lens you use the most (17-55). It would be different than the one I voted for (70-200 2.8 IS).

70-200 2.8 IS hands down. It does everything very very well. It's the one primarily attached to my body and if I could have only one lens, it'd be the one.

i think that the result of the poll would be meaningless. it has a lot of parameters as to what determine the best; and don't forget about subjectivity in choosing what are included in the poll in the first place.
