I have one and find it quite handy although it seems a bit pricey for what it is. That said, used properly, it will give you a very accurate WB and can be quickly used each time the lighting conditions change. IMO...it's a valuable tool if you shoot events or situations that have changing lighting conditions. It can save a lot of time in PP. On the other hand, there are more affordable options if you shoot in more controled conditions such as a simple grey card.

It's a bit pricey, but gives the best white balance I've ever got.

Yep, point it at a light.

If you want to save some money for same effect:
1) Do a search for "Hickspodisc" home made version - if you have some craft skills and some time
2) Use a (new) white coffee filter over the end of the lens and use it like the Expodisc. Search "coffee filter expodisc"

I have one of these disc but have never used it. The instruction say you have to stand next to the subject and shoot back towards where you would be shooting from. Seems a bit much. Many times you can't even get next to the subject.

Anyone used any shortcuts with good results

I don't have a ExpoDisk, but the principal is basic. They tell you to stand next to the object to be photographed so that the light source strikes you the same as the object. Example: if you're standing on open ground, fully illuminated by the sun, you can stand anywhere and the results will be the same.

If the object is in full sun, but next to a red building, then position matters. The object rendering will be influenced toward the warm side by the red building. The expo reading will cool down the shot.

So, if you are photographing a landscape on a heavily clouded day, the reading will be pretty much the same in all places. This side of the canyon or the other side.

Using indoors at sport shoots I assume you are not able to get next to the subject and shoot back toward light source? What do you do? Do you shoot towards the light source (assume ceiling lights) from where you are?

There are 13 threads on this on the first page when typing "Expodisc" using our search function.
That said, I have one and it works very well. If you get one though, buy the largest and you can just hold it up to your smaller lenses.

Not wishing to argue with someone with - by far more knowledge than me, but........

Although this is not Expodisc but WhiBal, according to this video (Michael Tapes) you would have to be careful as to what paper you are using for white balance. I do appreciate the benefits it can have in exposure assessment.

to save time the relevant piece is at 4 mins 53 seconds into the video.
http://www.whibalhost.com/_Tutorials.../05/index.html

A better point is made here at 8mins 56secs into the video
http://www.whibalhost.com/_Tutorials.../06/index.html

Surely a proven neutral reference has to be better, and not such a waste of money, although I do think the Expodisc is a little expensive?

I used to have one when I was a Nikonian, then again nikon's WB setting is easier since you don't have to go to the menu like in Canon's

But yeah it was awesome !! worth the money in my opinion. saves you a lot of time in PP
