Flying down to Mexico for a week, Akumal Bay more specifically, on the 2nd and am really looking forward to adding to my photo collection. I have about 7,000 shots from last year at the same place. Anyone have any tips on good spots for that once in a lifetime shot in the area?

Sorry, no help on the specifics of the area. Here's what I recommend before going to any area: Surf the web for images that other's have taken of that area. Critique the shots mercilessly (on notepaper, not on a blog, that's rude). Convince yourself you could do the shots better. Figure out how to do them better. As for me, I've seen what I can do with waterfalls. I know I can do better. I've seen others that are better, but then, I've seen many more that are worse. The variables that I'm changing deal with time of day and cloudy days. I'll shoot in RAW more often if I need to adjust the colors. Framing could ALWAYS be better. There's always the standards of straight horizons, pedestrians, backgrounds, foregrounds, and ugly things that nature puts in the frame which can be easily moved. There is no such thing as "spray and hope" with 15-second exposures, so I have to think all this out in advance.

I'd recommend you take a trip to Sian Ka'an, if that's the kind of stuff you're interested in (nature, birdwatching, wildlife).
Akumal sounds like a good place for underwater photography, if you have the gear, although I wouldn't know personally. Finally, don't necessarily stick to the coast, if you travel inland a bit you'll find several interesting places, such as cenotes and underground rivers and such that can be quite an adventure, and very good photo ops. I'd ask around about this one, I'm not familiar with anything like this specifically in this area, I just know they exist. |

Thanks for the tips! I have a few thousand pics from the week. This year wasn't so successful for underwater. Just too much current. Got some great pelican shots though...
A few are over in this thread! Pelican and Abandoned Resort
