I used to shoot with the 85mm f1.8/20D along the baseline and that was fine, except the 20D's focus dissatisfied me.
Then I bought the 1DmkIIn and the 85 seemed very short - too short a) I barely have to crop anymore b) I have more reach than the 85mm/20D combo, making it easier to capture jump shots & action from out at the three point line. And I still get great close ups right under the basket. c) Picture quality is superb Here are some shots from last night's games, all shot with the 135L @iso1600 and f/2. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So, who else uses the 135L for their main basketball lens and could I see some pics? The 135L is my main basketball lens on the 30D. For my style, it's outstanding. Sometimes, I'll pull out the 85 1.8 (but not often). The 85 1.8 is beautiful also, but I find myself shooting almost everything with the 135L.
No pics, I'm at work and going straight to BB after work. |

Wow, on the 30D. That's a long setup (216mm)

I used to combo that lens with my 200mm 1.8 lens on my 1D MK II. But now I am using strobes to try and shoot and have been using a 70-200mm 2.8 IS and shooting at f/4.
I love the lens but It might actually find it's way up on the sales block to get a 24-70mm 2.8 or a 17-55mm 2.8 IS lens to use on my 40D. Great lens if you are only stuck with Ambient light. Ross

I'm at work again and off to BB after work (almost every night).
In the majority of the church, elementary, and high school gyms in our area there is practically no baseline. You know those gyms, the out of bounds line, then a wall or a small cheerleader space. When I do shoot from baseline or corner I generally use the 85 1.8. My style of photography is "from the stands", just as a regular spectator would see. Of course, in many gyms/venues/arenas, that's close. With the 135L I can cover an entire basketball court, and depending on where I sit, some shots will be much tighter than others. Anyways, that's my thing, everyone shoots differently. Whatever gives you the results you are looking for. |

The 135L is all I use. I tried to break out the 70-200 at the last game. But, that was short lived. Had the 135L back on before the end of the fist quarter.
